Don’t Ever Think Whitey Bulger Was A Stand Up Guy: He Was A Craven Betrayer

Whitey was a guy who was looking for excuses, sad to say. He wasn’t really a stand up guy because the first chance he had to come up with a scheme to try to get himself off the hook he threw the guy who had been his friend and who protected him from other people to the wolves.  I’m not going to get into whether Whitey was an informant or not at this point, but you do know that since about 1975 FBI Agent John Connolly protected Whitey.

He also protected Steve Flemmi, who we know was an informant because he testified under oath in 1997 that he was one since the mid-1960s. Connolly did not develop him as an informant. That was done by FBI Agents Paul Rico and Dennis Condon who handed him over to Connolly after Rico left Boston for the Miami FBI office in 1975 and Condon retired in 1977.

I think it was Condon although it could have been Rico who introduced Connolly to Flemmi. Flemmi, as you know, had just returned from Canada to Boston in 1974 after being on the lam from serious state criminal charges including blowing up a lawyer’s automobile. Condon was able to get those charges squashed which opened the door for him to come back and help the FBI out again.

Connolly would try to help Flemmi after he was indicted in 1995 for racketeering. He would provide information to him that he requested. They used as a go-between Kevin Weeks who was at one time Whitey’s strong-arm buddy. Whitey had fled town in December 1994.

The relationship between Connolly and Whitey was much closer than that between him and Flemmi. They had the Old Harbor Village and the South Boston Irish connection which counted for a great deal. Flemmi was content to let them be close as long as the protection went to both Whitey and he.

When Whitey got arrested in Santa Monica California in 2011 Connolly who was doing time in Florida looked upon this as a good thing for himself. He expected that Whitey would say that he knew nothing about the murder of John Callahan which was the reason he was sitting in a Florida prison. Obviously Connolly thought the relationship he had with Whitey would continue on.

He should have known better as an FBI agent. How many times did he see guys flip on their friends to get something for themselves? How many times had he heard the expression there is no honor among thieves?

Whitey, after being in jail for a while waiting for trial and after meeting with his lawyers to discuss his chances of beating the rap, which realistically speaking were non existent, Whitey became just another jail-bird looking to stab someone in the back for his own benefit.

How could he do it knowing that it really would make no difference in the outcome of his case? John Connolly made sure that from 1975 up until 1990 while he was handling Whitey that he could stay on the street and would be advised as to anything that was being done by law enforcement which might put him in peril. When it came to Whitey’s criminal acts, Connolly didn’t want to know about them. As best I can see his relationship went from handler/informant to buddy-buddy. The were together often; there’s even rumors they took a week-long trips together out of the country.

So what did Whitey do to the guy who got all jammed up because he saved him from doing any time for many years? Without any possibility of getting any gain from it, he stated that he had paid Connolly hundreds of thousands of dollars for protection and information. Here he was knowing he would never see the street again stabbing a guy who was good to him for many years in the back. Can anything be more craven than that? Is that a sign of a stand up guy?

According to a book by Janet Uhlar Whitey says he now hates Connolly. The reason he gives is that Connolly had a file in the FBI office in Boston listing Whitey as an informant. Whitey wants everyone to believe he wasn’t an informant particularly because that is the worst thing an Irish person can be even though you wouldn’t know it from all the Irish guys in South Boston who stumbled over each other trying to inform on others to get a break.

That reason is just another typical criminal excuse for betraying someone else. They all need excuses for their depraved actions. it’s like the saying  “you can’t rat on a rat.” Of course you can. But even worse than being an informant, or as the hoodlums call it a rat, is betraying one was your friend by scurrilous lies for no discernible gain.

FBI ex-boss admits assaulting 6-year-old girl

WASHINGTON — The former chief internal watchdog at the FBI has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl and has admitted he had a history of molesting other children before he joined the bureau for what became a two-decade career.

John H. Conditt Jr., 53, was sentenced last week to 12 years in prison in Fort Worth, Texas, after he admitted he molested the daughter of two FBI agents after he retired.

He acknowledged molesting at least two other girls before he began his law enforcement career, his lawyer said.

Conditt headed the internal affairs unit that investigates agent wrongdoing for the Office of Professional Responsibility at FBI headquarters in Washington from 1999 until his retirement in June 2001, the FBI said. He wrote articles in law enforcement journals on how police agencies could effectively investigate their own conduct.

  5. What makes you say Jimmy Bulger was closer to John than a man he did crime with side by side for decades?I have always wondered why you never bring up the relationship that Steve Flemi had with Raymond Patriarca and how that helped Jimmy Bulger? How many people that read your blog and have followed these events of so many years realize that the crime family in Boston operated under the authority of Providence at least as long as Raymond Senior was alive. After his death in 1984 it was not the same between Boston and Providence. Again Jimmy Bulger benefits from his death, as the son was not as respected. Jimmy Bulger was always coniving and selling out John was no surprise , he was bought and paid for.

Ed Tatro dealing with Brett Kavanaugh coverup
    of JFK Assassination

    http://jfkfacts.org/on-jfk-secrecy-brett-kavanaugh-sides-with-the-cia/

Brett Kavanaugh, the future of justice?
The D.C. Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 on July 9th that the CIA does not have to pay my court costs incurred in the long-running FOIA lawsuit Morley v. CIA. The split decision was joined by Judge Brett Kavanaugh, who was nominated by President Trump later that day to serve on the the Supreme Court.

Kavanaugh’s opinion disparaged my reporting and vouched for the very “reasonable” actions of the CIA.” ( The word appears 23 times in the decision; “reasonably,” and unreasonably,” another 23 times.) It is reasonable to conclude that Kavanaugh is deferential to the CIA.

About the information I obtained via litigation, the unsigned opinion said, “the public benefit was small.” The decision made no reference to extensive coverage of Morley v . CIA in the New York Times, Fox News, San Diego Union, St. Paul Pioneer Press, CBS News in Dallas, and the New Yorker, among many other news organizations. It is not surprising that the CIA denies any “public benefit” to a closer look at some of its shadier JFK secrets. But does the DC Court of Appeals, the second highest court in the land, deny it too?

    Judge Karen Henderson
    Judge Karen Henderson, Kavanaugh critic
No. A strong dissent by Judge Karen Henderson takes a much more balanced and independent view of the case, in my view. Appointed by President George H.W. Bush in 1990, Henderson points out that the court had previously found that I had met the standard of “public benefit” established in case law.

In a 2013 decision the court stated.

Morley’s request had potential public value. He has proffered—and the CIA has not disputed— that Joannides served as the CIA case officer for a Cuban group, the DRE, with whose officers Oswald was in contact prior to the assassination. Travel records showing a very close match between Joannides’s and Oswald’s times in New Orleans might, for example, have (marginally) supported one of the hypotheses swirling around the assassination. In addition, this court has previously determined that Morley’s request sought information “central” to an intelligence committee’s inquiry into the performance of the CIA and other federal agencies in investigating the assassination. Under these circumstances, there was at least a modest probability that Morley’s request would generate information relevant to the assassination or later investigations.

    Henderson concludes:

In sum, I believe the district court erred on two levels: it erred in evaluating each of the four factors individually and abused its discretion in weighing them against one another. Accordingly, this case does not call for “[d]eference piled on deference.” Maj. Op. 11. It calls for an adherence to Davy IV and our four earlier Morley opinions. Because I believe the district court ignored our mandate and misapplied our precedent, I would vacate the district court order a fifth time and remand with instructions to award Morley the attorney’s fees to which he is entitled.

Unfortunately, the majority, meaning Kavanaugh and Trump appointee Judge Gregory Katsas, disagreed. I have 45 days to appeal.

The only stand-up guy, er, woman, in this whole sordid mess is Bulger’s girlfriend, Catherine Greig.

John Connolly finishes a distant second. He did a lot of bad things, but he’s not a murderer, and he sits in a Florida prison at age 79 because he wouldn’t talk.

It shouldn’t surprise us that the only folks who’ve honored the gangsters’ code of silence are not gangsters.

Greig and Connolly have already paid for their sins many times over. Both should be released from prison immediately.
