Gangster Thursday: How many people did Whitey kill? Whitey killed a thousand.

Whitey With Weapon

I suppose you must figure it is around that amount from the publicity that surrounded him. We all read how he terrorized the City of Boston  and environs for 25 years. We read about it even though we were residents in those areas and were not terrorized ourselves but surely most of the people were and we just did not realize it. The question that must be answered is whether you can be terrorized without knowing it.

I should mention the form of the  title to this post is taken from an advertisement that used to be played on Boston’s radio stations although the words are changed When asking the question about Whitey it is necessary that it be done by using the tune of that ad by Adams and Swett Carpet Company.

The advertisement asked: “How many cookies did Andrew eat? Andrew ate eight thousand.” That was the telephone number of the company doing the advertisement , AN8-8000. AN was the abbreviation for Andrew. My first home telephone number was Geneva 6-5173 or GE6-5173.

Back to the ditty about Whitey’s murders. How close do you believe  he came to a thousand? If not to that amount, was it over 100? What about 20 that the prosecutors believe he did? Perhaps it was only 11 as the jury in Whitey’s case found.

What if I told you it is entirely possible that Whitey murdered no more than five people. That’s  impossible you may think. But when you look at who did the murders and the motives behind the murders the numbers dwindle substantially.

You may say he obviously murdered Eddie Connors. Didn’t  he in a monitored telephone while in Plymouth jail when talking with a nephews or niece about Eddie Connors make the rat-a-rat sound of a machine gun indicating his use of one to kill Eddie? He did. No question about it.

But Connors was not killed by a machine gun. His killers used shot guns. That’s a huge difference. It indicates he may not have been there and taking credit for a story told by one of the shooters. What would have been Whitey’s motive in murdering Eddie Connors? He did not even know the guy. He had none.

As I see what has happened Whitey he liked the idea of being seen as the guy who did terrorize the city for two and a half decades. He believed the publicly about himself. He liked the idea he was portrayed as the ichiban criminal of all time. He could not understand that his status was ginned up not because of what he did but because people wanted to get something on his brother.

The more they inflated Whitey’s prowess the easier they could say Whitey was so huge that it was impossible for his brother not to know his ongoing criminal behavior. If Whitey was a local hoodlum involved mostly in strong arming bookies and extorting a guy here and there, then you would be hard pressed to suggest his brother knew anything about his criminal activities. In fact his brother when confronted with the questions about Whitey’s  alleged crime refused to believe them.

It was a strange situation. Whitey basking in the false assertions relative to his crimes at the same time his brother was trying to defend him. Whitey did his best to play into the false narrative which brought unfair ignominy on his brother who stuck by his side.

Whitey was like Trump is: a total narcissist. Neither cared who they hurt; they only care for themselves. Trump held an inside rally the other day. Ask if he had a concern about Covid-19 because the attendees wore no masks and didn’t social distance, he answered that he was on the stage and far away from those folk so he didn’t worry. He endangers them while keeping himself safe.

So did Whitey endanger his brother while keeping himself safe. Neither Trump nor Whitey cared for others.

More than half of all wrongful criminal convictions are caused by government misconduct, study finds
Misconduct can be intentional or unintentional, but either way innocent people are found guilty

The irrational fear of a cheap, effective drug/ Dr X in The Quadrant

    17th September 2020
    https://quadrant.org.au/opinion/qed/2020/09/the-irrational-fear-of-a-cheap-effective-drug/

Words are very powerful. They can incite hatred and violence. They can provide reassurance and hope. They can incite fear and dread. We have not heard many reassuring and hopeful ones this year, but maybe that is about to change. The truth is coming to light, and that is perhaps the most important issue at stake: Truth. Public policy, affecting the lives of every person in society now and into the future, should be informed by truth.
Well here are some of those truths: COVID-19 is an extremely infectious virus that can make you very ill and might even kill you. It might also leave you with debility, pain, fatigue and seriously compromised health. It spreads rapidly in aged-care facilities with devastating outcomes.
Now here are some less palatable truths: Doctors who have successfully treated this virus have been dismissed as cranks who don’t follow “the science”. Worse, they have been denied access to the very drug that could save lives.
This last point needs to be stressed because the drug is hydroxycholoroquine – a cheap, effective, off-patent medication. Numerous papers from around the world — the number of positive appraisals grows almost by the day — are documenting its effectiveness against this virus. Used in conjunction with zinc and an antibiotic it has stopped the progress of the virus. Patients administered the drug early in the course of the infection exhibit less severe symptoms and regain their health more quickly.
Why the war against a medication any reasonable person might regard as a godsend?
On April 29, 2020, the Victorian government “restricted the sale or supply or use of the poison or controlled substance Hydroxychloroquine under section 55(2) of the Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Act 1981 for a period of twelve weeks.”
Victoria’s DHHS website still carries this message (emphasis added):
There is no clinical evidence that hydroxychloroquine is effective prophylaxis against coronavirus
Hydroxychloroquine is in short supply and should be prioritised for use in recognised indications including autoimmune conditions and Q-fever endocarditis.
The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) have advised pharmacists to refuse the dispensing of hydroxychloroquine unless it is for a recognised indication.
Let us look at the underlined assertions one by one.
    # No clinical evidence?
Not so, says Dr Harvey Risch, professor of epidemiology at Yale School of Public Health.
    # Hydroxychloroquine is in short supply.
Clive Palmer provided 30 million doses of Hydroxychloroquine to add to the Australian stockpile.
    # PSA has advised pharmacists to refuse the dispensing of hydroxychloroquine.
So, should pharmacists enjoy the right to vet and veto what a doctor prescribes in consultation with his or her patient? Not according to the Australian Medical Association:
“Doctors are the only health professionals trained to fully assess a person, initiate further investigations, make a diagnosis, and understand the full range of clinically appropriate treatments for a given condition, including

Celerino Castillo (born 1949) is a former agent for the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).[1]

    Early life and military service

Castillo was a detective sergeant with a Texas Police Department from 1974 until 1979, and graduated from the University of Texas–Pan American in 1976 with a BS in Criminal Justice.

He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

    Drug Enforcement Administration

While in Vietnam, Castillo had witnessed first-hand the effects of drug abuse on his soldiers. In 1979, he joined the DEA as an enforcement agent in America’s “War on Drugs”, specializing in undercover investigation and acting as a foreign diplomat for six years in South and Central America. He is best known for blowing the whistle on the CIA-backed arms-for-drugs trade used to prop up the 1980s Contra counter-insurgency in Nicaragua, and for the book that he wrote on that subject, entitled Powder Burns: Cocaine, Contras and the Drug War and released in 1994, two years after he had left the DEA.

After leaving the DEA Castillo worked as a private investigator, and also worked to promote his book, appearing on television and lecturing at various universities on the drug war and US foreign policy in Latin America. Since 1997 he has been accepted as an expert witness in federal courts on Outrageous Government Conduct, Informants, and Racial Profiling.

In 2008 (three years before Operation Fast and Furious became publicly known) Castillo told reporter Bill Conroy that agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) agents were participating in the smuggling of high powered weapons into Mexico. According to Castillo the source of that information was a government informer who was later murdered

He began his career working for newspapers in Kentucky and Ohio, winning numerous awards, and building a strong reputation for investigative writing. Hired by the San Jose Mercury News, Webb contributed to the paper’s Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the Loma Prieta earthquake.

Webb is best known for his “Dark Alliance” series, which appeared in The Mercury News in 1996. The series examined the origins of the crack cocaine trade in Los Angeles and claimed that members of the anti-communist Contra rebels in Nicaragua had played a major role in creating the trade, using cocaine profits to support their struggle. It also suggested that the Contras may have acted with the knowledge and protection of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The series provoked outrage, particularly in the Los Angeles African-American community, and led to four major investigations of its charges.

  4. Fake news on the inside rally. Trump had an outside rally planned but the Democrat governor of Nevada wouldn’t permit them to use the site so it had to be held inside. Can a Democrat pol prevent the Republican nominee from holding rallies in their state? Hope not. 2. Trump should be praised for getting the Big Ten back on the field, He was the moving force. 3. Connors was killed by the Winter Hill gang on the orders of Winter. He was in the same situation as Halloran. A gang member who just got arrested on a serious charge, knew too much and could flip on the bosses. Purportedly Connors went to Winter Hill to get rid of Robichaud. Either he or they killed him. Plus he may have been involved in Spike O’Tooles death. As in the Halloran killing Whitey was following orders from Winter Hill. So he may have been there.

  5. No surprise that President’s Clinton, Trump, and Obama may be narcicissts, and have human failings. But heck, THREE peace deals in the Middle East, the first in 26 years. Amazing. And no midnight deliveries of hundreds of Millions in unmarked foreign currency to the number one sponsor of terrorism.in the world, Iran. (How much if that was kicked back to our Congress? John Kerry, McCain, & Joe Bribem?

But sir, can you please expound a little more of the legendary attorney John Durham?

He brought no charges against the CIA for alleged wrong doings. Beyond the Bulger case, does he have a solid record as a prosecuting attorney?

  6. Thanks for a well written article Matt.

    1. Why do you think that Flemmi refused to join the Mafia when many of his contemporaries in the criminal world such as the Salemme brothers did?

    2. What is your understanding of former police detective William Stuart as wasn’t he one of those who was indicted for the murder of William Bennett?

    3. How are Peter Poulos and Daddieco connected to the Roxbury Gang?

    4. Do you think that to the likes of Kevin Weeks, Martorano and the other witnesses against Whitey it suited them to portray Whitey as this criminal mastermind? So that they could tell the federal government that they had no choice but to follow his orders when in reality they were his partners in crime and not his lieutenants.
