Religious Sunday: Catholics and Abortions

The nomination of Amy Barrett to the a position on the Supreme Court is Trump keeping to his word he would appoint judges who would overrule the case of Roe v Wade which allows abortion in the United States under certain circumstances. Her past writings and her association with pro-life groups shows her total willingness to do just that. Her disclaimers otherwise are deceptions for she would not be sitting there except for that fact.

She will join other justices as Alito, Thomas, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh who will be anxious to do the same. So we can expect Roe to be overturned within a year, two at the most. What then? What will overturning it accomplish?

One thing for sure it will not end the controversy over abortion nor will it end abortions in America. We will then have a hodgepodge of states where abortions are allowed, others with varying restrictions on it, and some where it is forbidden. How does that accomplish anything other than inconvenience women seeking to have an abortion. The numbers may be decrease somewhat but experience teaches us there are bad effects from banning things.

Look at Prohibition. When liquor was outlawed the demand for it increased. Will the same thing happen with abortions? The most sinister effect of banning the sale of liquor was that it could not be enforced. It was taken over by gangster bootleggers who thrived on providing the illegal substance to the public, became well funded doing it, and took over other legitimate businesses.

Where will the woman who wants an abortion turn to?  Most will go to adjoining states where it is legal; there will be groups providing trips to Canada where it is legal; or to Mexico where it is legal in the first trimester. Some will go to local back alley providers set up by the gangsters or to their Mexico outlaw clinics where abortions after the first trimester will be performed

I have noted that the Catholic Church seems to have boxed itself into a corner with its pro-life stance that really boils down to being anti-abortion. We have seen the Catholic attorney general Barr bring back the death penalty which the Catholic Church is against but there are no outcries by the bishops against him. Are they being hypocritical when they keep silent there?

I have also pointed out that there was no great outcry by bishops when Trump separated families (who by the way were mostly Catholics from Central America) – mothers from their children. Is that because once a child is born they lack concern for him or her? Or is it easy to be against abortion because it does not cost anything?

A guy can sit at home and condemn women who have abortions, feel good about it, and still not have invested one penny in the effort. With regard to immigrants coming here the same guy is going to be concerned that it may cost him some money so he won’t lift a finger to protect them. Nor will he want to expend any of his money on bettering the services to poor families trying better the lives or their kids.

I think abortion is wrong. There are some who think it is not wrong. Most of the world believes it is right especially in the first trimester. China with over a billion people required it.

The Catholic Church if one knows its history has been back and forth on the issue. “Pope Gregory XIV . . . [declared] abortion to only be homicide if it took place after ensoulment, which he determined took place 166 days into a pregnancy, or well over halfway through the second trimester.”  That was its position from 1591 to 1869 when it was changed again. It has gone back and forth over abortion with the major issue being against it after the soul enters the fetus, “ensoulment,” occurred.

The author who wrote the above article concluded: “Saying that being pro-choice is incompatible with being Catholic reflects a very narrow understanding Catholic history and theology. Catholicism is complex, and so are Catholics. A vast majority of Catholics practice behaviors denounced by the Catholic hierarchy, such as using birth control, having oral sex, and supporting abortion, while still practicing Catholicism faithfully. Maybe it’s time for them to include prayers to St. Brigid and St. Antonius while they do so.”

TRUTH re hospitalizations and deaths and treatment, as of today
On April 21, 2020 we reached the maximum number of patients hospitalized with Covid-19:

    59, 780.

Only a tiny number of hospitals were overwhelmed, and by the time temporary staff arrived in several weeks to help out, the peak was over and they were not needed.

On October 19, nearly 6 months later, we have

37,744 hospitalized with Covid-19. This is 63%, or 5/8ths of what we had at peak. Yet the dire warnings are back. STAT News, a Boston Globe spin-off, is also an outlet that gets paid to plant articles.

STAT’s latest headline reads, ‘At a breaking point’ : New surge of Covid-19 cases has states, hospitals scrambling, yet again.

The truth? The US has over 746,000 staffed hospital beds. Covid cases are filling 5% of them. So, while there may be a hospital here or there that has more than its share of cases, all that is required is to transfer some patients, and/or redirect ambulances, and close the hospital briefly to admissions. This is done all the time. It started decades before anyone ever heard of SARS-1 or SARS-2.

STAT is at it again, ginning up the fear whenever it can. We now know how to take care of these patients, unlike during the peak in April. (See earlier posts on Dr. McCullough, Dr. Zelenko’s and Dr. Marik’s protocols.). Check the statistics for yourself.

Deaths are not skyrocketing either. For the past week, the US has averaged 708 deaths/day, just 39% the average 1823 deaths/day, which occurred during the first week of May.

Some places never had a “first wave” and are having it now. There will probably be many bumps as first waves occur in areas that were not significantly hit earlier. Expect them. Treat them correctly, and there should be very few deaths and very few chronic problems.

Don’t just treat those at “high risk”–treat everybody with symptoms, to protect them from a potential chronic condition. That is the job of doctors, to treat patients using the best methods, not to march in lockstep (goosestep) with government advice (NIH guidelines) that both defies reason and is proven to have killed off lots of Americans. Are we Nazi doctors or are we real doctors?

Dick Gregory – On Cosby, Tiger, Jordan and Magic

    • I knew Gregory back in the 70’s. He was crazy smart and knew the way to play us pink people. In this video he has obviously gone over the falls. Too bad. Last time I talked to him was at Logan in about 74. His conspiracy theory stuff was in full bloom. No Black man ever did anything wrong and no White man ever did anything right. He liked me cause I slapped five like a brother. His words. I grew up in Roxbury and after I left still hung with Black people. It was the only way I knew how to slap five.

    Transcending the Tribe
    By Caroline Myss

All of us are born into a “tribal mentality” of various forms. These include our family unit, religious background, country of origin, ethnicity, etc. The tribal mentality effectively indoctrinates an individual into the tribe’s beliefs, ensuring that all believe the same. The structure of reality – what is and is not possible for the members of the group – is thus agreed upon and maintained by the tribe.

While the tribal mentality has definite benefits in terms of establishing common ground and ensuring group survival, it is not a conscious agreement. We are born into it. Yet at a certain stage, both personally and collectively, the tribal mentality must be challenged. People can then begin to recognize the need for a personal honor code independent of the tribe. If humanity is to progress, we need to learn how to treat everyone – regardless of tribal affiliation – with honor and respect.

Every one of us is plugged into the tribal mind. We support tribal belief patterns by directing a percentage of our life force into maintaining our affiliation with the tribe. This involves an implicit agreement to think like the tribe thinks, to evaluate situations and people the way the tribe does, and to believe in right and wrong according to tribal values and ambitions. As long as the tribal mentality within us remains unexamined, we unwittingly subject others to our tribal laws.

When we are plugged into tribal thought forms, we can easily believe in nonsensical prejudices held by the tribe. Tribal mentality allows us to hold harsh, judgmental positions or attitudes about an entire group of people: “All fat people are lazy,” or “all Irish are drunks,” or “all Muslims are terrorists” for example.

A rigid tribal thought form may have little truth to it, but individuals hold to such beliefs because that perspective is what the tribe has agreed to believe. Innocent children, born into the hatred and prejudice of their parents and ancestors, grow up inside a tribal mentality that sponsors an endless march toward war against the tribe’s perceived enemies. People grow up hating other people – people they have never seen – based on group affiliation. This is the shadow side of the tribe.

Inevitably, some among us come to a point where we want to break out of the inflexible tribal mentality. At some point, these individuals want to explore, develop, and manage their own consciousness without the judgments and limitations of the tribal mind.

It is easy to spot these mavericks when they start to question and unplug from tribal mentality – they hang out on the periphery looking bored and restless, or whimsical and dreamy. Others may act out the agitated hot-head as they challenge tribal ways.

The unspoken assumption of the tribal mind is that everybody loves being part of the tribe. And in many ways, we do. Knowing where and to whom we “belong” is crucial to our self-concept and sense of safety in the world. Yet when we begin the real deep journey of questioning, “What do I believe?” and start to individuate from the tribe, we often enter a dark night of the soul. It is, by necessity, a passage we take alone.

It’s one thing to reject what we don’t want to believe anymore. It’s quite another to begin to explore what we do believe. All we know as we enter the dark night is that we can’t go back – even when the tribe is the only world we’ve ever known.

At this critical point in our development, the tribe doesn’t feel right anymore. It no longer offers us comfort. Previous feelings of security and familiarity begin to feel like a trap constraining our individuality and hampering our efforts to discover deeper levels of who we really are.

This dark night passage pushes us to look at our false gods – the tribal belief patterns in which we’ve become invested and to which we’ve given our allegiance.

  4. The same people who think Judge Barrett is too religious assert she lied under oath at her hearing and would violate her oath on the bench.

CJ Roberts will try to hold things back in the face of threatened Court packing. One recalls Justice Owen Roberts “Switch in time that saved nine.”

There will be no need to leave the country to get an abortion in any case. Most states would permit it anyway.

  5. Perot Conservative

The US allows abortion up until birth; and Democrats even support killing a child after a botched abortion.

  6. william m. connolly

Matt writes, “I think abortion is wrong.” Good. Matt understands that it is wrong to kill innocent human beings. Matt understands the science of embryology that shows an individual human life begins at conception.

Matt cites erroneous 16th century teachings, before the science of embryology established that an individual human being’s life begins at conception. Today, the Church’s teachings are science-based: “Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception.”

From Wikipedia, some concise facts: “Until the birth of modern embryology through observation of the mammalian ovum by Karl Ernst von Baer in 1827, there was no clear scientific understanding of embryology. Only in the late 1950s when ultrasound was first used for uterine scanning, was the true developmental chronology of human fetus available.”

    Today’s science supports pro-life.

    2. It is easy to distinguish Capital Punishment (the execution of guilty convicted killers) and the killing of innocents by abortions. Today, the Catholic Church is opposed to Capital Punishment. I have read this: “On 2 August 2018, it was announced that the Catechism of the Catholic Church would be revised to state that the Church teaches that “the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person.” A full letter to the Bishops stated that it reflected how modern society had better prison systems that made the death penalty unnecessary for the protection of innocent people.” How do modern prison systems guarantee dangerous killers will not escape, or guarantee that prisoners will not kill guards or other inmates? Are some killers are so vicious and so continuously threatening, that Capital Punishment is warranted?

    • Prisons are impossible to control under the present system. We can destroy certain segments of organized crime on our streets but can’t control it in buildings where all of the criminals are locked up. Doesn’t that sound fucked up to you? How does heroin get into prisons? All drugs? How can a person under lock and key kill another person? Rape another person? There are countries where none of this happens in their prisons. What do they do that we don’t? It is all based on money. Big surprise, huh?

I knew a big bookie in Boston. He said the cops don’t bother him. How, I asked. He said, “Hand a cop a bag of cash every few months with the same amount of money he makes in six months, or even a year, and you have your answer.” One thing he did say was that the only cops you could never do that to were U. S. Marshalls. Absolutely untouchable.
