The World Cup ended yesterday with a German victory.Among those present and pictured sitting together were German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin. They held a meeting to discuss various issues. One was Ukraine.
Wasn’t it only a few months ago that Merkel told us Putin is off his rocker? What does that say about her now that she is cozying-up with him. Are we seeing another Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact that was made by a couple of other crazies: Hitler and Stalin. Recall Germany and Russia were enemies before they became friends by dividing Poland into parts that they could eat up before they became enemies again.
What could they now be planning to divide? I’m sure they weren’t planning to divide Crimea because Putin has already gobbled that up. It is truly unimaginable to me that Merkel seems to have forgotten about Putin’s seizure of Crimea. That happened only 4 months ago. What kind of message does that send to Putin? How will that deter his lust for other areas?
Seriously, Russia invaded Ukraine and annexed Crimea and all seems forgotten. Are she and Putin discussing how he will take an additional chunk out of Ukraine? According to reports Merkel agreed with Putin that the situation there is deteriorating. Has Merkel lost a few of the marbles that she accused her new friend Putin of losing by not recognizing the problems in Ukraine is due to Russia? Did she not hear Putin say that the eastern part of Ukraine is part of Russia.
You know we’ve been spying on the Germans and Merkel doesn’t like it. Now a poll in Germany says up to 57% of Germans want to go it alone without U.S. Merkel’s spokesman, Steffen Seibert said our relations “hit a new low, mentioning “profound differences of opinion” between Berlin and Washington. Next day the CIA’s station chief in Germany was asked to leave the country.”
How best can Merkel show her pique than making side deals with Putin. Remember Putin has said: “I expect that the citizens of Germany will also support the aspiration of the Russians, of historical Russia, to restore unity.” Putin’s historical Russia is Ukraine. That same article noted: “In private, Merkel told a recent meeting of her political party members that she will “work every day to ensure that we continue to speak with Russia.”
Within hours after the Putin-Merkel Pact at the The Maracanã Stadium Russia went on the move. It was reported: “Russia on Sunday accused Ukraine of lobbing a shell over the border and killing a Russian civilian and warned of “irreversible consequences,” in a sharp escalation of rhetoric that raised fears of a Russian invasion in Ukraine’s east.”
Putin sees that U.S. President Obama’s attention is elsewhere and that he has no plan for protecting Ukraine. Putin has been given a green light by Merkel. Expect Russian forces to move into Ukraine shortly. Expect the U.S. to threaten, but not enforce, sanctions. Expect Germany to call for peace while doing little else as Merkel promised. It’ll be her way of slapping back at the U.S.
Think of Putin’s mindset: “Four months after seizing Crimea no one cares; four months after I take more of Ukraine no one will care.” Unfortunately, if he is guided by history, he may be right. Merkel will get her petty revenge by offering up Ukrainians to sate Putin’s ravenous appetite. What is that you said about the Marshall Plan?
